A practical guide to Canadian visitor visa applications, proof of funds, family ties, biometrics and how a parent or grandparent Super Visa differs.

Visitor Visa versus Super Visa

A Canadian visitor visa, also called a temporary resident visa (TRV), is used by eligible travellers seeking temporary entry for tourism, family visits or permitted business activities. A Super Visa is a separate option for eligible parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents. It has additional requirements, including qualifying host support, medical insurance and other criteria. A Super Visa is not simply a longer ordinary visitor visa.

Start with the correct IRCC application pathway

Use the current Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) instructions to determine whether to apply through the IRCC Portal or another supported account pathway. Required forms and upload screens vary by application type and circumstances. Answer the questions consistently and review each uploaded document before submission.

Core documents for a visitor visa

Prepare a valid passport, travel-purpose explanation, relevant travel history, employment or business evidence, financial documents and proof of family or other ties to your country of residence. For a family visit, include an invitation and evidence of your relationship with the host where appropriate. The final checklist depends on your personal situation and IRCC's instructions.

How much bank balance should you show?

IRCC does not publish a single universal bank balance that guarantees a visitor visa. Your available funds should make sense for your travel duration, accommodation, transport and family circumstances. Recent statements, fixed deposits, income evidence and explanations for unusual transactions can help make the financial picture understandable. A sponsor's financial support does not automatically replace evidence about the applicant's own circumstances.

Demonstrating reasons to return to India

Employment, active business responsibilities, family commitments, ongoing studies, assets and a credible short-term itinerary may help demonstrate your intention to leave Canada at the end of the authorised stay. Present genuine evidence rather than overstating ties.

Biometrics and passport submission

Many applicants aged 14–79 must provide biometrics unless an exemption or valid previous biometric record applies. Follow the biometric instruction letter and arrange collection at an authorised location. If IRCC issues a passport request, follow the current instructions for submitting the passport through the designated channel; a passport request is not itself permission to travel.

Special considerations for parents and grandparents

A Super Visa application involves additional host eligibility, financial support and medical insurance requirements, as well as any applicable medical examination and other evidence. Verify the current rules directly with IRCC before choosing this route.

After submission

Check your IRCC account for messages, requests for further documents and a final decision. Processing times are estimates and vary with application volume and individual complexity. Avoid making irreversible travel commitments before the required travel document is issued.
