What UKVI assesses in a visitor visa application

The UK Standard Visitor route is for eligible temporary visits such as tourism, seeing family or certain permitted business activities. Applicants must meet the visitor rules, including showing that they are genuine visitors who intend to leave at the end of the visit and can fund their proposed trip without prohibited work or reliance on public funds.

Do large bank deposits automatically cause refusals?

No. A large deposit is not automatically disqualifying. The concern is whether the financial information is credible and consistent with the applicant's declared income and circumstances. A sudden credit without a clear explanation can create questions, especially if it is relied on to fund the trip.

How to explain a genuine large deposit

Identify the date, amount and actual source of the credit. If it came from a fixed deposit maturity or closure, include the deposit certificate, closure or maturity advice and matching account entries. If it came from property proceeds, a business receipt, a transfer between your own accounts or a family gift, provide the relevant authentic records and a concise explanation. Do not invent a source or present borrowed funds as savings.

Is there a fixed minimum bank balance?

There is no universal fixed savings balance for every Standard Visitor applicant. UKVI considers whether the trip is affordable in light of income, savings, expected costs, accommodation and any genuine third-party support. An applicant with modest funds and a credible, affordable visit may have a stronger explanation than one showing a large unexplained deposit.

Employment, business and family ties

Employees may provide salary slips, employer confirmation and approved leave. Business owners can explain their role and supply registration, tax and financial evidence. Students, homemakers, retirees and unemployed applicants should present truthful circumstances and relevant sponsor or family support documents where appropriate.

Cover letters and sponsorship

A concise cover letter can connect the itinerary, financial evidence and personal circumstances. When a relative or friend in the UK is providing accommodation or paying expenses, explain the relationship, support offered and supporting evidence. A sponsor does not automatically remove the need to establish genuine visitor eligibility.

Online filing, uploads and biometrics

Complete the UKVI application accurately, pay the applicable fee and follow the instructions for identity verification, biometrics and supporting document uploads. Check the correct category for each document. Processing and optional priority services depend on current availability and the visa route.

Decision letters, passports and eVisas

Follow the decision notification for next steps. UK immigration status is increasingly digital, but eVisa access and account requirements depend on the immigration permission and current UKVI instructions. Do not assume every visitor must follow the same eVisa onboarding process.
